Internet of things and security

One of Contextant's raison d'ĂȘtre is to help companies capitalize and obtain value from the the Internet of Things phenomena.  However, one concern that appears in a lot of tech articles is about security, how are these items going to be updated to fix security flaws in their firmware?  Is security built-in?  Do they have their own firewalls?

Here are a couple items I've found recently.  Is the threat overblown?  Perhaps.  The item with the progressive device required physical access, but the idea in general is an important one.
